Chwele-Kabuchai Member of County Assembly (MCA), James Barasa Mukhongo, has died after a short battle of illness bringing to an end distinguished political career that spanned over two decades.

Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka confirmed the sad news, describing the late legislator as a dedicated leader who served his people with unwavering commitment.

James Mukhongo, who was first elected as a councillor in 2002 under the old constitution, went on to serve five consecutive terms earning him the reputation of a steadfast grassroots mobilizer and loyal servant of the people.

National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula, in a moving tribute, recalled knowing Mukhongo long before politics defined him.

“He was a young man full of dreams, humility, and an extraordinary love for his people,” Wetang’ula said. “From the start, James remained grounded and true to his purpose.”

Wetang’ula hailed the late MCA’s leadership as Chairperson of the Finance Committee in the Bungoma County Assembly and his role as Ford-Kenya’s Kabuchai branch chairman.

“He led with integrity, loyalty, and the heart of a servant. His voice spoke for the voiceless, and his efforts uplifted the vulnerable,” the Speaker added. “His passing is a deep wound not just to his family and the people of Kabuchai but to all who were touched by his spirit and passion for community empowerment.

In his tribute, Wetang’ula extended condolences on behalf of his family, the National Assembly, and the Ford-Kenya Party.

“Farewell, my brother. Farewell, gallant son of Kabuchai. Your legacy will endure in the lives you touched and the path you paved.”

Kanduyi MP John Makali has also mourned the departed leader, describing him as a dependable colleague whose devotion to public service will be missed.

Joining in the mourning was Bungoma gubernatorial aspirant Zacharia Barasa, who described the late MCA as a reputable public servant whose leadership will be dearly missed.

“James Barasa Mukhongo was a man of principle and humility who gave his all to the people of Chwele and Kabuchai. His departure is a blow to the county’s leadership,” Barasa said.

Mukhongo’s death marks the end of an era in Bungoma politics. Plans for his final send-off and a by-election to fill his seat are expected to be announced in due course
